The Worlds Bar and Bistro opens tonight at Stratford for the Paralympics

The Feast is pleased to announce that tonight sees the launch of The Worlds Bar and Bistro at Stratford Old Town Hall. This pop up bar and restaurant, featuring the amazing Worldscape table designed by atmos will be open from 10am until late every day during the Paralympics from tonight’s Opening Ceremony until Sunday 9th September.

The changing weekly menu will feature the best cuisine from around the world including dishes such as Traditional Cassoulet from Team France (Shredded confit duck, sausages and lardon’s stewed with beans and tomatoes and served with pomme puree) and Mackeral Escabeche from Team Portugal (Pickled mackerel with onions, carrots, peas and beans, served in a pickled broth with soft bread).

FEAST 19 – WESTERN SOUTH AMERICA – SUNDAY 12 AUGUST

The closing night of the Olympics found us inching our way in the direction of the next host country, Brazil, and coming to a pause in Western South America for Peruvian food and a first taste of Latin American culture.

Ceviche’s Martin Morales brought his head chef Gregor Funke from Soho to Stratford for the night, and treated us to the fresh, zingy and delicate flavours of their signature fish dish, followed by a beautiful plate of chicken and dark beer rice, flecked green with coriander.

We finished off suitably exotically with lúcuma ice cream and crumbly alfajores biscuits made by Alexandra at Amisqui. What a huge pleasure to discover this light, poised and aromatic cuisine!

In celebration of the origins of the Olympics, our own live Greek Dionysia stepped up onto Worldscape & presented a dish containing ancient Greek ingredients – the kind of meal the Athenians would have eaten approximately 2800 years pre Facebook.

While the main course was settling, we all made our way to the Old Town Hall’s grand Side Foyer for a wonderful performance of Argentinian tango by Love Tango’s Tanja Raaste and Hugh Walker, surrounded by Nadege Meriau’s photographs.

Back in the marquee, singer-songwriter Corina Piatti had the audience under the spell of her passion and the refulgence of her voice as she performed a set of tango and Brazilian bossa nova classics, as well as some of her own compositions by candlelight.

Peruvian food, Argentinian tango danced by European performers in a room filled with photographs by a Tunisian-born French artist, and an Argentinian singer performing songs from her homeland and Brazil to an audience from all over the world – that is what Global Feast is all about. Now all that is left is to hand the baton on to Rio tonight!

FEAST 18 – CARIBBEAN – SAT 11 AUGUST 2012

Tan Rosie are mother Monica and daughter Lee, who run a supper club from their home in Birmingham, and sell their Caribbean food products to the world.

The family hails from Carriacou in Grenada, also known as Spice Island, and they brought the warm flavours of nutmeg, cinnamon and clove to the Global Feast table last night, serving up red snapper with homemade bread rolls and citrusy salad, curry mutton with rice and peas and the most perfectly unctuous ginger cake ever.

It was Caribbean family cooking on a huge scale, putting us in the party mood in time for Andreas Grant’s amazing THISISNOTABAR club night, but not before Futerra’s Ed Gillespie had taken us for a tour of the globe, bringing the realities of climate change to life region by region, and Jesse Pie slunk through our contours, making geography sexy again.

Generous portions of food for the mind and the body for our last Saturday night at the Old Town Hall!

The United Plates of America bring Southern cooking to the Feast on North American night

Scott Ball of Kooky Bakes, ScottCanCook and supper club The United Plates of America is our guest chef for North American night.

Scott is best known for his award-winning brownies, cakes and pies sold at east London outlets such as the Sunday Upmarket on Brick Lane, but he also runs a successful supper club called The United Plates. He tells the Feast about his night:

“I’m really excited to be representing North America. Just like the expansiveness of America, it’s been difficult to create a menu that represents the whole of America, so I’ve gone back to my birthplace of the American South and created a menu that celebrates southern food. What i love most about southern food is the graciousness of the experience, much like the setting of the global feast. I was born in The Peach State of Georgia so it’s only fitting that peaches feature in the cocktails, canapés & dessert. The menu is filled with modern adaptations of classic southern staples such as hush puppies, grits, green tomatoes, buttermilk fried chicken n’ waffles, succotash and last but not least pie.”

Expect a modern twist on good ol’ fashioned southern cooking!

MsMarmiteLover shows us how it’s done on Mexican night

After a triumphant posh fish n’ chips at British night of the Feast, Kerstin Rogers, aka MsMarmiteLover takes one again to the kitchen to cook up a Mexican fiesta this Friday.

She says:

“Mexican food is still greatly undiscovered in the UK which is a shame because it’s one of my favourite cuisines. There is more to it than nachos, dip and chilli con carne. Although don’t get me wrong, I love a dip and will be doing several. My salsas have been complimented by Mexicans themselves.

I’m liaising with the South Devon Chilli Company to see what UK grown poblanos and jalapenos they’ve got in their fields. Expect also fresh corn tortillas, tamales (green chilli in corn husks), great margaritas, black beans with chocolate and chipotle, fish tacos, guacamole, salsa and tomatillo salsa for an incredible Tex-Mex feast. I’m hosting this in conjunction with a new supper club hostess, Tiffany Morris, who is straight from a dusty border town in Arizona, teetering into Mexico. Her place is called Supper at Tiffany’s where she now lives in South East London.”

Kerstin will be joined in the Feast kitchen by Tiffany Morris. Tiffany was born and raised in Arizona on the border of the Mexican state of Sonora. In addition, to frequent travel in Mexico she lived in Costa Rica for 6 months. Since moving to the UK 7 years ago she has enjoyed sharing her knowledge of Mexican and Latin American culture and cuisine. This passion has led her to begin a Mexican supper club which will launch in September in south east London.

And straight from the silver screen, your entertainment this evening is by Melissa Blanco Borelli. As her alter ego, Havana Barbie, she performs one woman cabaret shows based on the aesthetic of the cabaretera movies from the golden age of Mexican cinema.

FEAST 11 – CHINESE – SAT 4TH AUGUST

Every day brings new challenges for Kerstin and Col in the Global Feast kitchen. Guests chefs arrive from all over the culinary world, bringing not only their ingredients and food heritage, but also their techniques, equipment and often quite particular requirements. This is what happens when you decide, in effect, to run a different restaurant every night for twenty nights, and it’s truly impressive to behold them, taking it all in their stride. But they really had their work cut out when they received several kilos of dim sum for the first course of the Chinese feast, care of Courtesan in Brixton. Without the industrial steamers Oriental restaurants have, all pans were set to boiling, more drinks were poured, and in spite of nerves, they managed to turn out basket after basket of perfectly steamed dumplings for our first course.

The rest of the meal was brought to us by Cherry Smart of FedByTang, whose soy marinated egg canapés were one of the highlights of the press view. They had done the rounds again during cocktail time, along with Siu Yuk (crispy pork) and spoonfuls of tofu and broth. Cherry’s been blogging about food for about a year, and recently started a supper club in her South East London home. On an amazing night for Britain at the Olympics, we found ourselves having a TV dinner on a huge scale, as we sat eating Sichuan peppercorn duck breast and cheering Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford and Mo Farrah onto gold medals over the course of a single dish. With wave after wave of excitement threatening to wreak havoc on our digestions, we settled down to the more sedate, jazzy rhythms of The Imperial Works over pudding, a soothing and classy end to a nail-biting night!
